His background is in graphic art – mainly as production artist and studio manager in print design and advertising in Edinburgh. On retiring he returned to Belfast and continued sketching and drawing – eventually painting in acrylic and oils. He gained entry into the Society of Ulster Artists and exhibited in various exhibitions with them. He had one painting accepted and sold at the RUA, at this time painting with Janice Lightowler anher group from Moira. During this time (under the influence of Neil Condron) he gravitated to soft pastels. At present mostly working in soft pastels with the odd segue into oil paints.
In 2019 he joined the Pastel Society of Ireland, becoming a committee member and successfully exhibiting with them since. He is now experimenting with oil pastels.
Art Statement
I draw! I paint!
I have no high motives or driving forces spurring me on to do so. At least I’ve never sat down to analyse such. I just love to paint. The whole process fascinates me . From the initial dread of a first mark on blank surface to the moment when I decide (rightly or wrongly) to make my last mark.
When I start to paint or draw I disappear.
